Omni Toxica (18+)

Paula Chaves & Thais Di Marco

OMNI TOXICA performs at Worm in Rotterdam at Tuesday March 24.

OMNI TOXICA is a journalistic and forensic performative ritual on the history of Coca and how it passed from being a green, sacred, medicinal plant into a whitewashed, capitalist, toxic product: cocaine. The project borrows strategies from journalism, spiritism, narco culture, alchemy and activism to construct a dystopian laboratory. Here the politics of death behind what we call the Coca-Cocaine-Cola complex are revealed as the continuation of a neo-colonial order in place. In OMNI TOXICA the coca plant machiavellizes its own court case while shedding light on the incoherent gap between justice and legality, between wellness and toxicity that overshadows this whole multibillion-dollar industry.

Paula Chaves

The Colombian theatre and dance maker, performer and queer activist, Paula Chaves, is currently based in the Netherlands. After her dance and circus studies in New York, Bogota and Berlin she got a bachelor’s degree in Choreography at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. She has worked as a choreographic assistant and dancer for Amanda Piña (nadaproductions) on the long-term project Endangered Human Movements and has recently started a collaboration with visual artist Hilda Moucharrafieh. Paula’s last two pieces Paraart and Against the Wall are part of a long-term research on the relationship between art, propaganda and neoliberalism in the West. In 2019 she was awarded the 3Package Deal fund for International Talents by AFK within the ‘engaged art’ coalition.

Thais Di Marco

For OMNI TOXICA Paula works with choreographer and theatre director Thais Di Marco from São Paulo. Thais obtained her master’s degree at DAS Choreography in 2018 and is currently dedicated to the problematics of evil in contemporary art. With more than a decade of experience in the performing art field, the productions of Paula and Thais deal with post-colonial, trans-feminist, and anti-capitalist aesthetics.
