Simon van Schuylenbergh
Residency September 2021
Artist Simon Van Schuylenberg (BE) is currently in residence at Veem House – a collaboration with De Brakke Grond.
This week we host Simon Van Schuylenbergh in our studio. Simon Van Schuylenbergh (1994) is a Belgian theater maker and performer. He graduated in 2017 from KASK School of Arts (Drama) in Ghent. Simon continues his work an artists in Brussels and is one of the initiators of Ne Mosquito Pas – a practice and event series which invites artists to create solos out of their interpretation of “failure” then share those outcomes with a live audience.
This week he is meeting artists from the dance and performance field in Amsterdam as well as getting an overview of the city/society and how the different cultural scenes function – in brief!
During his residency in November performers from different disciplines come together to work on and perform their ‘failed’ work. These could be scenes cut from a show just before the curtain went up, ideas that never escaped anyone’s notebook, or lasting fascinations from the past that for some reason never materialized.
On November 19th the artists participating in Ne Mosquito Pas are invited to interpret the concept of ‘failure’ from their personal perspective. The collection of the different performances that emerge is often eclectic, but characterized by a collective effort to undo a preconfigured idea of what ‘works’ on stage and what doesn’t. They are autonomous contributions, but it is in relation to each other that the solos show a glimpse of the potential of failure to resist the constant quest for success as the default mode by which neoliberal lives are lived.
Simon and his collaborator Rosie Sommers will give a workshop which gives an inside look into the origins of the Ne Mosquito Pas practice, the values at it’s core and how it is manifested and upheld.
