The Future of Veem

1 August 2024

Today we were informed that the AFK (the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) has rejected our grant application for the next four years. The committee is not convinced by our plans for the continued development of Veem House for Performance as a relevant art space centred on the work and vision of artists. As a result, Veem House’s stable foundation is about to fall away, which inevitably means we will have to close our doors. This saddens us greatly.

For forty years, Veem has been a house of unprecedented value for Dutch mime, performance and movement theatre. There is no place in Amsterdam besides Veem that offers so much space and freedom for research and experimentation within the performing arts. Our house is a place for artistic development where communities come together to exchange, find inspiration and express solidarity. Where graduates from the city’s performing art schools take their first steps toward the future, often starting immediately after graduation. A place that hosts many (open) residencies for international performing arts makers, and thus strengthens Amsterdam’s role within a global network. And last but not least, Veem is a place that continues to draw a loyal audience with its distinctive and innovative artistic program.

We are considering alternative options to secure this unique and significant place for the coming future. To design a new possible future, we will be conferring with a wide range of people over the coming period and involving our community of makers and partners. Do you feel you can help?
